Do you have a bushfire plan for the 2016 fire season?

Every organisation or community group who operate out of premises that are near dense forest, bush, grass land or the coast need to prepare for the threat of fire and bushfires, and decide on fire plans now.

and practice your bushfire plan. The more you prepare your property the better the chance of surviving a bushfire, even if you are not there.

Write down your bushfire plan, communicate that plan and know if you have the clothing, equipment or resources to enact your fire plan to leave early or stay and defend.

A prepared and practiced bushfire survival plan will help your community group and organisation know where others are and what they’ll be doing should an emergency occur. Be prepared, confident and more in control so you can cope should a disaster strike.

Fire Preparedness is a shared responsibility

The responsibility for surviving the fire season is shared between emergency services and the community. We all – including you and your community group – share responsibility for our community’s safety.

Tips to get you started on your bushfire plan

Create at least a 20 metre circle of safety around your buildings by clearing rubbish, long grass and other materials that may catch fire. A well prepared building is more likely to survive a bushfire, a few simple things to do are:

  • -Keep gutters clean and install metal gutter guards.
  • -Store flammable fuels and chemicals away from the building and store in an enclosed shed away from the building.
  • -Install sarking behind weatherboards and beneath existing roofing.
  • -Replace glass over time with toughened or laminated safety glass.
  • -Install shutters or metal flyscreens to doors and windows.

In considering how you will respond if a fire event occurs whilst people are at your premises, consider some of the questions below:

  • -Which Fire Danger Rating is your trigger to close your facility or cancel an event?
  • -What will you do if there is a fire in the area and people at your premises cannot leave?
  • -Have you communicated your bushfire plan to your stakeholders?
  • -Have you practised your bushfire plan?

Ansvar Education Forums set record attendance

Ansvar Insurance, one of Australia’s leading specialist insurers has recently concluded its most successful series of education forums to date, setting a record attendance of more than 300 delegates across Australia.

The latest series of forums, titled Innovation Revolution: The New Age of Insurance, provided brokers detailed insight into the changing landscape of the Insurance industry from an innovative technology perspective. This included Ansvar’s progressive adoption of the latest technology for risk assessment and mitigation with the use of drones, thermography and security and fire detection systems.

Ansvar launched their new Business Resilience Toolkit at the forums to help brokers assist their SME clients in the event of a crisis. This new risk solution product follows the release of Ansvar’s new business insurance products for SMEs in July 2016.

The Business Resilience framework consists of three components; a Crisis Management Plan, a Business Continuity Plan and Recovery Plans, all of which equip brokers to seamlessly work with their SME clients in the face of a disruptive event.

“The record attendance is a clear sign that brokers value these forums, as they provide insight into current issues and emerging trends within our specialty industry sectors. They are the perfect opportunity to share with brokers the latest risk and insurance solutions needed to best service their clients across all of the sectors in which we operate,” said Warren Hutcheon, CEO Ansvar Insurance.

Ansvar’s next series of Broker Forums are currently being developed for August 2017.

Applications opened for 2017 CEP Grants Program

Applications are now open for our annual Community Education Program (CEP) Grants. The CEP provides a range of grants to organisations supporting Australian youth through programs that fall under two categories – Empowerment and Education & Outreach and Support. Since the grants were first awarded in 1994, Ansvar has contributed over $10 million to education and life skill programs reaching thousands of young people across Australia.

In order to qualify for an Ansvar CEP Grant, organisations must meet the following criteria:

Be a registered not-for-profit with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status
Seek funding for a specific program
The program seeking funding must target Australian youth under 25 years
The program must be sustainable beyond receiving a grant from Ansvar
The program must fit into the Empowerment and Education or Outreach and Support categories.
“Year after year we are amazed by the calibre of organisations that apply for the Ansvar CEP Grants. As funding becomes more and more difficult for these deserving programs, it is especially gratifying for everyone at Ansvar to be able to contribute in making a difference to the lives of so many young Australians,” said Warren Hutcheon, CEO Ansvar Insurance.

“We encourage every organisation across Australia who meets the selection criteria to apply for a CEP Grant. We look forward to receiving the applications and helping these programs enrich the lives of the young people they support,” continued Hutcheon.

Some of the 2016 CEP Grant recipients included Australian Refugee Volunteers, Down Syndrome Victoria, Top Blokes Foundation, The Reach Foundation and Courage to Care. With the help of the grants, all of the programs were able to offer life changing programs to a wide range of deserving recipients across Australia.

Applications for the Ansvar CEP Grants will open on Thursday 1 September and will close at 5.00pm on Friday, 14 October 2016. Ansvar will notify all organisations of the outcome of their application on or before Friday, 31 March 2017. Relationships ‘crucial for brokers in data-driven world’

By Insurance News

Brokers must focus on client relationships to provide personalised advice as the community becomes increasingly comfortable with disruptive technologies, a forum on innovation heard today.

Warren Burns, director of technology think tank the Leading Edge Forum in Asia, says improved data and software have expanded the opportunities for automated advice that can be adjusted for specific customers.

“Software is eating the world slowly,” he said. “Algorithms are starting to be a very comfortable part of our lives. We trust them more because they are made without emotion.”

Mr Burns, who featured in the cover story in Insurance News (the magazine) in February, is also the founder of innovation agency BurnsRED.

He says technology allows customers to better understand and compare products, challenging the traditional roles of  “professional complexity explainers” such as financial advisers and brokers.

He says brokers must become “customer intimacy” businesses, of equal importance to a client as a lawyer or accountant.

“Obfuscation of complexity is no longer a business model,” he said. “If you’re a salesperson for products, you are not a customer intimacy business.”

LMI Group MD Allan Manning told the forum the rise of aggregators also reflects a market focus on reducing complexity, but the role of brokers is key in helping clients with risk-related matters.

More broadly, he says major changes driven by technology include the use of Big Data and the increasing shift from community risk rating to more precise assessments.

The rise of driverless cars presents challenges, with the potential to reduce motor insurance claims and earnings, and a range of flow-on effects.

Issues related to cyber crime also bring both risks and opportunities, with 25% of brokers having experienced an attack, he says.

“To me, cyber is the biggest single risk facing us as an industry,” Professor Manning told the forum.

Faith, heritage and care sector specialist Ansvar hosted the event – titled Innovation Revolution: The New Age of Insurance – in Melbourne after forums in Brisbane and Sydney. Events are also scheduled for Adelaide on Friday and Perth on Tuesday next week.

Ansvar CEO Warren Hutcheon says brokers seeking to be trusted advisers require trilateral arrangements with specialist insurers and customers.

“We believe clients will be looking for bespoke risk management support.”

He says recent trends in the care sector include centralised consumer websites, increased transparency and a focus on real-time data and more flexible digital technologies.

As barriers drop, drones set to soar

By Insurance Business Online

As barriers against the use of drone technology continue to be overcome, one industry leader believes the technology is set to have a big impact on the insurance industry

Warren Hutcheon, CEO of Ansvar Insurance, told Insurance Business that the recent decision by the business to use drones highlights the importance the technology has on the industry.

“Risk management innovation that supports customers in our core specialty sectors is a key part of Ansvar’s value proposition,” Hutcheon said.

“The use of drones was first considered some 12 months ago, so it has been a long journey assessing the potential, along with the challenges and risks of insourcing drone operating capability. For us the business case stacks up due to the specialty nature of our customer base and the range of services we provide to them.”

Hutcheon noted that the use of drone technology will only increase across the idnsutry as barrier to use continue to be navigated.

“Drones are already impacting the industry from a post-loss perspective, particularly following catastrophic events,” Hutcheon said.

“A growing number of insurers and loss adjusting firms are seeing the benefits for utilising drones to understand the significance of events and resultant damage. From a risk management perspective, the use of drones will become more common, but predominantly for specialty risks in the first instance.

“There are a number of barriers to be able operate drones commercially, but over time I believe there will be greater use across the value chain within the insurance industry. An outsourced model may be more feasible for some organisations.”

Drones will not be the only section of emerging technology to impact the industry as Hutcheon said that it is imperative for insurance businesses to stay ahead of the curve wherever possible.

“It’s extremely important that the industry keep on top of all potential technology developments,” Hutcheon continued.

“Digital disruption is happening now and at a significant rate. As an industry we need to be relevant and stay relevant.”
Whether drones are the right avenue for every insurance business remains to be seen but Hutcheon said that

“All emerging technologies need to be assessed by the industry,” Hutcheon said.

“For personal lines insurers, understanding telematics and other monitoring technologies is important right now. Wearables are being utilised by health and life insurance companies.

“Drones can be effective for certain aspects of the insurance value chain, it depends on your segmentation strategy and the range of services you are looking to provide.”

Ansvar Insurance Announces the Use of Drones in Risk Assessment

Ansvar Insurance, one of Australia’s leading specialist insurers, announced the addition of drones to their risk assessment toolkit.  Ansvar has made a significant investment to certify four risk advisors to offer nationwide coverage of this new level of service. Ansvar is the first insurer to obtain its Operators Certificate from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Drone technology will allow Ansvar’s risk advisors to survey properties and access areas that were previously inaccessible in a safe and cost effective way.
