History

Ansvar Insurance was launched in Australia in 1961 by the Swedish company Ansvar Mutual as a motor and household insurance company that only insured people who did not drink alcoholic beverages or considered otherwise as ‘total abstainers’. At the time, the requirement that all policyholders were total abstainers from alcohol applied equally to staff members and directors. From the beginning, Ansvar added property and liability insurances to its range of products available to businesses owned by total abstainers and to churches, but this was limited only to churches who held a firm policy opposing alcohol usage.

Since the early 60’s, Ansvar has come along way and in 1998, the British company, the Benefact Group (formerly the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group) purchased Ansvar Mutual and became the parent of Ansvar Insurance in Australia. Established in 1887, the Benefact Group is an independent, specialist financial services group that exists to give all of its available profits to good causes.  Owned by a registered charity, Benefact Trust, Benefact Group’s family of businesses provide specialist insurance, investment management and broking and advisory services in the UK, Australia, Canada and Ireland.

Truly focussed on making a real difference in the world, the Benefact Group is the fourth-largest corporate donor to charity in the UK, according to the UK Guide to Company Giving 2021/22. It has donated over £100m to charity since 2016 and is aiming to reach its target of giving £250m by 2025.

With the backing, support and guidance of the Benefact Group, Ansvar has evolved to become one of the leading insurance and risk solutions specialists in Australia today in the Care Services, Community Services (Not For Profits), Learning and Education Services, Faith Communities, Arts, Culture and Heritage and Commercial Property Owner sectors.

Community Education Program Grants

Ansvar has a long history of involvement in the Australian community and philanthropic giving. Ansvar believes supporting the community is what sets us apart from other insurers.  Ansvar provides support to community groups and organisations through a range of activities, including donation drives, sponsorships, strategic partnerships and all staff receive a community service leave day each year to enable them to spend time volunteering with organisations and activities close to their hearts.

Over the years Ansvar has been involved in a number of charitable causes and in 1994, we established our own charitable program, the Community Education Program (CEP). This program provides a range of grants each year to organisations supporting Australian youth through programs under two categories – Empowerment and Education, and Outreach and Support. Ansvar contributes up to 10% of its annual profits to the CEP.
